The present invention provides a method for efficiently handling a dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) Internet protocol version 4 (IPv4) address release request in a PMIP- or GTP-based network. An Internet protocol (IP) address release method for a packet data network gateway (PGW) in a mobile communication system according to the present invention comprises the steps of: allocating an IPv4 address and an IP version 6 (IPv6) address to user equipment (UE) in order to activate a packet data network (PDN) connection; receiving a control message related to release of the IPv4 address from a serving gateway (SGW); transmitting a binding revocation message, including information instructing the IPv4 address to be released and the PDN connection to be maintained, to the SGW; and receiving a binding revocation acknowledgement message corresponding to the release of the IPv4 address from the SGW.
