PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To extend grayscale from p bits to q bits with high accuracy in accordance with the luminance distribution state of an input image so as to prevent degradation in the picture quality of a pseudo-contour, etc., without lowering accuracy due to the accumulation of arithmetic errors.SOLUTION: The present invention is provided with a bit extension processing unit (11) for bit-extending a digital input image in which the luminance value has a resolution of p bits, to q bits (p<q). When bit-extending the luminance value of a pixel of interest in the digital input image, the bit extension processing unit (11) assigns a weight to the luminance value of the pixel of interest from the magnitude relation of the luminance values of a plurality of ambient pixels present around the pixel of interest and the luminance value of the pixel of interest, and performs bit extension from p bits to q bits by applying gain correction to the luminance value of the pixel of interest after being assigned the weight.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1 |
