Disclosed are a system and a method for recognizing a map image based on an optical character reader (OCR). The system comprises: a recognition unit recognizing characters from an input image by using a character recognition technique; a searching unit searching a place name relevant to the character from a database including geographical information; and a provision unit providing map information including the place name as a recognition result of the input image. The purpose of the present invention is to provide a system and a method capable of recognizing a map image without being influenced by a type and a shape of a map.
