An apparatus for the detection of a change of condition of a component, such as an air valve, is fitted to operate in conjunction with a pipeline 2 and/or a change in condition in the pipeline. The change in condition may be the detection of opening of the valve 4 from a normally closed position in order to ensure that the valve is operating correctly and, if requited, steps can be taken to move the valve to the required condition or effecting repairs to the valve. The apparatus can also be used to ensure that the monitoring of the usage of material passing along the pipeline, such as water or effluent, and within certain parts of a distribution network can be assessed more accurately. The apparatus may be provided as a housing to be attached to or adjacent to the component to be monitored and includes vibration and/or sound detection devices for detecting change in condition and also allowing the apparatus to be moved between dormant and active modes. There are provided data processing means and storage and/or communication means to allow data and/or graphical representations of the operation of the component to be determined with respect to time. |
