679,911. Grinding and sawing machines. GOLDSCHMIDT, H. June 4, 1948 [Aug. 18, 1947], No. 15180/48. Classes 60 and 145 (ii). [Also in Group XXII] A multi-purpose machine tool for metal, wood, and other materials, comprises a pair of horizontally disposed ways, a headstock mounted on said ways, a spindle rotatably mounted in the headstock, a carriage mounted on the ways for movement to and from the headstock, and an upwardly extending vertically adjustable standard mounted on the carriage, a table being pivotally connected to the standard on a horizontal axis above the ways for movement from a horizontal position above the ways to a vertical position normal to the spindle. The tubular bed members 14 are carried by a tailend bracket 23 and pivot 25 supported by a pedestal 11, and a head-end pedestal 10 with detachable bracket 16, Figs. 1 and 8. The headstock 35 carries a rotatable spindle mounted in ball bearings 39, 40, Fig. 3, in a spring-returned quill 37 longitudinally adjustable by means of rack and .pinion gearing from an external handwheel 66. The quill may be clamped in adjusted position by a handle 62. An adjustable stop 73 is provided in conjunction with the quill feed. An electric driving motor 43 is carried below the headstock and drives the spindle through a belt 51. The whole of the headstock assembly is slidable along the tubular ways 14 and may be clamped by wedges 95, 98, Fig. 4, adjusted by a rod 94 with a hand-knob 97 extending to the front of the machine. A carriage 86 is also slidable along the tubular ways and capable of being clamped in adjusted position by a wedge arrangement similar to that for the headstock assembly. A tool rest (not shown) is secured to a post mounted on this carriage when the machine is to be used as a lathe, the work being held between a chuck or the like carried by the axially adjustable spindle and a fixed headstock centre 78, Fig. 3. Sawing.-A circular saw 99, Fig. 3, may be secured to the machine spindle and is adapted to extend through a slot 100 in a table 101. The latter may be pivoted about the axes 103 and is vertically adjustable through the hand-knob 117. The table is carried on pillars 102 mounted in the carriage 86. A rip fence 120, or an angularly adjustable guide bracket 127, Fig. 7, may be provided to guide the work. Grinding.-The machine may be used as a disc sander, the disc 136, Fig. 7, being mounted on the spindle and the table 101 and carriage 86, described above, positioned on the guideways to accommodate the work.
|
