695,189. Tool-holders. WESSON MULTICUT CO. May 12, 1952 [May 26, 1951], No. 11911/52. Class 83 (iii). A tool-holder for lathes &c. of the type wherein a bit is held in a tool body by a tensioned band, comprises a body having recesses on the outer surface thereof and means for retaining two or more bits in said recesses, a band anchored at each end having means urging it towards the body between the said bits. The tool bits 10, 12, Fig. 1, are of the solid carbide type and are nested in recesses in a body B. A band 14 passes around the inserts, holes in the ends of the band engaging notches in the ends of a cross-pin 16. The hole for the latter is of oval cross-section, Fig. 4, so that a wedge-ended screw 42, when tightened, moves the pin 16 in a direction to draw the band tight against the tool bits. A height-adjusting screw 32 is provided for each tool bit. To ensure tension of the band around the exposed faces of the tool bits a conical anchor post 38, Figs. 1 and 2, is provided, the slanting edge of which is parallel to the adjacent wall of the body. In a modified holder, Fig. 6, one tool bit 62 of round and one 60 of square section are held by a band 64 the ends of which are anchored by screws 66. The band is tensioned by a shaped block 76, Fig. 8, secured to the middle of the band by a screw 78 which also connects it-to a plunger 70 slidable in a bore in the body H. The plunger is forced outwardly by a compression spring but has a conical depression 84 engaged by the tapered end of an adjusting screw which, when screwed down draws the plunger further into its bore and thus tightens the band 64. Adjusting screws are provided to give a fine heightadjustment to the tools and the correct height is indicated by bevelled-off portions 100, Fig. 6, of a plate 96 secured to the top of the holder.
