1. A nanoparticle comprising a metal ion and a nucleic acid construct,
wherein the nucleic acid construct comprises at least two single-stranded nucleic acids, each of the at least two single-stranded nucleic acids comprising at least ten nucleotides arranged in at least two adjacent segments, wherein each segment of one single-stranded nucleic acid is complementary to a segment of another of the single-stranded nucleic acids, and wherein each pair of complementary segments is hybridized so that the nucleic acid construct comprises a plurality of double-stranded segments; and wherein the metal ion is bound directly to a phosphate backbone of the nucleic acid construct to form a metal layer, and the metal ion is an ion of a metal selected from the group consisting of gold, copper, platinum, palladium, and combinations thereof, wherein the nucleic acid construct comprises at least one cross-linking or intercalating agent between two nucleic acid strands where the segments are substantially complementarily bound to each other. |
