The combined signals are generated for each pixel block, for a plurality of pixel block lines in which pixel blocks each having a predetermined size are arranged in the predetermined direction. The pixel data amount for focus detection can be effectively reduced by, in the combining, making combining central points of signals, in the plurality of pixel block lines, shifted relative to each other or phases of positions of the pixel blocks different from each other.

A focus detection apparatus for detecting a defocus amount of an imaging optical system, from output signals of pixels each of which has a plurality of photoelectric conversion areas being divided in a predetermined direction, comprising: a combining unit configured to generate combined signals obtained by combining, in units of the photoelectric conversion areas, output signals obtained from each of a plurality of the pixels; a generating unit configured to generate a plurality of image signals for focus detection, based on the combined signals; and a detecting unit configured to detect the defocus amount based on a correlation amount between the plurality of image signals, wherein the combining unit generates, for a plurality of pixel block lines in which pixel blocks each having a predetermined size are arranged in the predetermined direction, the combined signals for each pixel block, wherein the generating unit generates the plurality of image signals for each pixel block line, and wherein the combining unit generates the combined signals such that central points of the pixel blocks for generating the combined signals, in each of the plurality of pixel block lines, have shifted relative to each other in the predetermined direction.
