摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical modulator that has high use efficiency of light and can separately modulate light at a wavelength in a plurality of different wavelengths, and an image display device that includes the optical modulator and can display a high-quality image.SOLUTION: An optical modulator 30 includes: an optical waveguide 302 made of a material having an electro-optic effect; a wavelength selection unit 303 disposed in the optical waveguide 302 and selecting a wavelength of light to be guided; and an optical modulation unit 304 disposed in the optical waveguide 302 and modulating intensity of the light at the wavelength selected by the wavelength selection unit 303. The wavelength selection unit 303 includes a broadened core part where a width of a core part 3021 in the optical waveguide 302 is broadened and an electrode to apply a voltage to the broadened core part, and is configured to excite multimode interference responding to light incident to the broadened core part, and thereby to be able to select a wavelength of light to be guided in the optical waveguide 302.
