The invention relates to a method for configuring a strand guiding system (8, 8a, 8b) of a continuous casting machine (2), as well as such a strand guiding system (8, 8a, 8b). The invention further relates to a strand guiding segment (10g-r) for guiding a metal strand in the strand guiding system (8, 8a, 8b) of a continuous casting machine (2). An especially advantageous method is accomplished, provided that the strand guiding system (8, 8a, 8b) has a plurality of strand guiding segments (10g-r) and control units (22g-r), wherein one control unit (22g-r) is allocated to each strand guiding segment (10g-r), each control unit (22g-r) identifies the strand guiding segment (10g-r) allocated thereto, and each control unit (22g-r) is essentially configured automatically depending on the strand guiding segments (10g-r) identified by the control unit (22g-r), and provided that the strand guiding system (8, 8a, 8b) and the strand guiding segment (10g-r) are prepared for the performance of the method according to the present invention.
