The invention relates to a method for operating a communication system (10), having the steps of: provision of a chip card (22), particularly a SIM card, in a communication device (20) of a motor vehicle (12), which chip card comprises a user identifier for dialling into at least one mobile radio network; storage of a device identifier for a mobile telephone (14) in the communication device (20) of the motor vehicle (20); set-up of a mobile radio link (24) between the mobile telephone (14) and the communication device (20) of the motor vehicle (12) using the user identifier stored on the chip card (22) if a predetermined activation action on the mobile telephone (14) has been sensed and it has been ascertained that the device identifier of the mobile telephone (14) is stored in the communication device (20) of the motor vehicle (12). The invention additionally relates to a communication system (10).
