Provided is a membrane-forming dope for carbon membranes, in which polyphenylene oxide in an amount giving a concentration of 15-40 wt% in the membrane-forming dope, and sulfur in an amount giving a proportion of 0.1-5.0 wt%, preferably 0.2-3.0 wt%, of the total weight of the polyphenylene oxide and the sulfur are dissolved in a solvent in which these are soluble. Using a double annular nozzle, this membrane-forming dope for carbon membranes is molded to hollow shape by a wet or dry spinning process, heated to 150-350°C in air and subjected to an infusiblizing process, and then heated to 600-800°C in an inert gas atmosphere or in a vacuum, and subjected to a carbonization process to produce a hollow carbon fiber membrane. When the product molded to hollow shape by a wet or dry spinning process is heated in air and subjected to an infusiblizing process while being stretched at stress of 0.002-0.005 MPa, a hollow carbon fiber membrane having exceptional gas permeability, as well as a markedly better separation coefficient (He/CH4), is obtained. |
