A charging unit (12) of an electrostatic precipitator has grounding electrode plates and charging electrode plates. Dust is charged by the deposition of the dust on the end parts of each of the charging electrode plates and the grounding electrode plates by a gradient force generated by applying high voltage to the charging electrode plate.
