A technique includes providing file services on a storage area network using a plurality of virtual machines disposed on a plurality of physical nodes of the storage area network. The technique includes, in response to detection of a failure associated with a given virtual machine executing on a given storage node occurring, pushing file services provided by the given virtual machine to another storage node.
