SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR TRANSPORTING HD VIDEO OVER HDMI WITH A REDUCED LINK RATE

In some aspects, the disclosure is directed to methods and systems for transporting multimedia data, such as ultra-high definition (UHD) video data or other video data, via a standard high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI), without requiring an increase in the link bit rate or increasing the number of signaling pairs. Display stream compression is utilized to compress a stream, and a transition minimized differential signal (TMDS) clock channel may be replaced by an ANSI 8b/10b encoded stream carrying additional data with a clock signal embedded within the stream. As this additional channel increases bandwidth by one-third, the systems and methods discussed herein provide four times more effective bandwidth than prior HDMI schemes, allowing UHD video to be transmitted via a signal HDMI link.

1. A system for transporting high definition multimedia data via a high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI), comprising:
an HDMI source in communication with an HDMI receiver via a plurality of channels, the HDMI source configured to:
receive uncompressed multimedia data at a first number of characters;compress the multimedia data to a second number of characters;transmit a first portion of the compressed multimedia data comprising subsequent packets interleaved via two channels of the plurality of channels; andtransmit a second portion of the compressed multimedia data comprising a third packet via a third channel of the plurality of channels.
