An underwater power generating apparatus e.g. tidal turbine 2 is attached to a support structure 1 on the bed 19 of a body of water. The turbine 2 is positively buoyant, and is recovered to the surface 18 by releasing the connection to the support structure 1, and making controlled free ascent to the surface 18. The turbine 2 may be allowed to float freely to the surface 18 without any cable or tether to control movement. A predetermined procedure is performed to confirm a suitable operating state of the power generating apparatus 2 before sending a release command to a control unit in the power generating apparatus 2 and releasing it from the support 1. |
