An optical sensor cable system 20 for deployment on the sea floor comprises a main cable 25 with a plurality of optical fibres and a plurality of sensors 21 optically connected to one of the fibres. One of the optical fibres of the main cable is branched to connect a spur cable 23 with at least one optical sensor 24 remote from the main cable, either directly or via or an optical connector (41; figure 4). There may be more than one branching units connecting discrete spur cables to the main cable, each having a single or multiple optical sensors. The spur cable can be connected to an optical fibre positioned outside the principle reinforcement of the main cable (11; figure 1), and it can be more buoyant than the main cable. The positioning of the spur cable sensors to their required locations can be performed using a remotely operated vehicle as a discrete step after positioning the main cable. |
