[Class 100 (i)] In connection with the side-lay device of a sheet-feeding apparatus for printing and like machines, the grippers of the lay are operated by a flexible connection such as a Bowden wire from the printing-machine thus permitting of fore-and-aft adjustment of the lay. The lay and its operating devices are mounted in a bracket d secured to a clamp a adjustable laterally of the direction of feed on a shaft c which is so mounted that it can be adjusted longitudinally of the direction of feed. The sheet is registered against a pivoted stop z by means of a reciprocating gripper hammer p mounted in the extension o of a carriage m which is moved outwards (to the left in Fig. 1) by an operating rod connected by a Bowden wire to a cam on the printing- machine. The rod g is guided by a central aperture in the bracket d, and to the bracket d is secured a pair of rods e connected by a bridge-piece f, the rods e serving as guides for cylinders k connected by a crosspiece i secured to the rod g, and also as guides for the carriage m. The gripper hammer p is normally raised by the action of the crosspiece i on a lever arm s under the action of a main spring which presses the rod g to the right, but when the rod g is moved to the left the crosspiece is withdrawn and the hammer is moved to engage the sheet under the action of a sliding ring t pressed to the left by a spring u on the rod g adjustable by screws v. After the sheet is gripped the carriage m is moved to the left by the action of the members k. The carriage m is prevented from movement on the rods e by braking-members w which hold the carriage until it is moved positively by the members k. The gripper slides over the sheet when it reaches the stop z, and the stop is raised by the action of the carriage m on an arm a<1> of the stop before the carriage reaches its extreme position. Two stops z may be used or one may be held out of action by a catch d<1>. Sheet guides e<1> are attached to the stops. |
