A joint for an artists stretcher for stretching canvases comprises first and second frame members A, B and a tongue C, wherein the frame members each include a groove D, E along their length, the ends of the frame members abut to provide the joint, the tongue is positioned in the grooves to hold the frame members together and the joint further comprises spring means F that act to provide tension between the first and second frame members. The spring may be positioned through a hole in the tongue. The joint may be used to produce canvases of many different shapes, including rectangular (figure 3) and hexagonal (figure 4). Also disclosed is a rectangular frame comprising a crossbar (I, figure 6) including a spring (F, figure 7) positioned between two frame members (A, B) to prevent them from bowing. |
