716,489. Making cartons. ROSE CONTAINERS, Ltd. March 20, 1952 [March 29, 1951], No. 7265/51. Class 18 Apparatus for forming carton bases and inserting them in tubular bodies comprises a punch and die for forming the bases and inserting them into a transfer member, and an ejector for forcing the bases out of the transfer member into the bodies. A cutter 14 cuts a disc from a web 12 and a plunger 21 passes it through a flanging die 19 into an aperture 26 in the cylindrical transfer member 27. The cylinder rotates to bring the base opposite an ejector 36 housed within the cylinder's open end. The ejection is attached to a tube 34 reciprocating on a stationary piston 44, and as the ejector advances, vacuum is created in the tube in front of the piston as soon as a hole 37 is closed by the base. The base is thus gripped and carried into a carton body 53 held in the pocket of a conveyer chain 49. The suction is broken when a hole 43 in the tube moves to the front of the piston. A reciprocating feeler 66 detects absence of a carton in a conveyer pocket by swinging forward to bring an abutment 64 out of register with a reciprocating abutment 63. This permits an element 58 to trip the pawl 71 of the rachet feeding the web 12. The Provisional Specification states that the conveyer is as described in Specification 716,490. |
