A portable body heat powered energy harvesting device comprising a Thermoelectric Generator TEG capable of harnessing human body heat (for example, heat from the users hand, wrist or palm) and convert the body heat (via Seebeck effect) to electrical energy; and an energy harvesting system (including an electrical DC/DC conversion) to process the electrical energy to charge or directly power a portable electrical appliance, wherein the energy harvesting system comprises a low power energy harvesting circuit and a high power energy harvesting circuit. The low power energy harvesting circuit may comprise in any combination one or more of a Depletion Mode Field Effect Transistors (FETs), an Enhancement Mode Metal Oxide Filed Effect Transistors MOSFETs and a step up transformer. The high power energy harvesting circuit may comprise one or more Enhancement mode Metal Oxide FETs. (MOSFETs) and, also may comprise any of a step up transformer, flyback transformer or an inductor. The step up transformer may have a core of relative permeability of between 5000 and 20000, a flyback converter with core permeability higher than 20000 and an inductor or core material permeability higher than 80000. The core material of the inductor/transformers may be may be a high permeability nanocrystalline or amorphous magnetic alloy. The portable energy harvesting system may comprise an integrated circuit. A Peltier module as well as a supercapacitor may be included. The energy harvesting device may further comprise a wrist band or garment suitable for holding against an users body. Applications include portable wireless key fobs, RFID tag for security purposes, hospital ECG monitors etc. |
