The present invention is directed to a base station including a transceiver configured to communicate with another base station using a radio resource, wherein the radio resource is allocated to the base station to serve communication devices located in a radio cell operated by the base station. A method of operating a base station is also disclosed.

1. A base station comprising:
a transceiver configured to communicate with another base station using a radio resource, wherein the radio resource is allocated to the base station to serve communication devices located in a radio cell operated by the base station, wherein the base station operates in a communication network and is configured to access a core network of the communication network through the other base station, wherein the base station further comprises:
a controller configured to switch between a first mode and a second mode; and
wherein in the first mode, the radio resource is used by the base station to serve the communication devices; andwherein in the second mode, the transceiver is configured to communicate with the other base station in order to access the core network of the communication network, and wherein the transceiver is configured to send to at least one of the communication devices or the other base station a control message comprising information on when the base station operates in the first mode or on when the base station operates in the second mode.
