An assembly includes non-load bearing housings, each housing including several cavities. Each cavity includes a stack of freely stacked electrochemical storage cells in the housings. Each electrochemical storage cell includes an anode electrode, a cathode electrode, and a separator located between the anode electrode and the cathode electrode. The assembly is configured such that pressure applied to the assembly is born by the freely stacked electrochemical storage cells. |

1. An energy storage assembly, comprising:
a plurality of electrochemical device units stacked one above another between opposing pressure plates; wherein each of the plurality of electrochemical device units comprises a housing and a lid forming a plurality of cell cavities with each of the plurality of cell cavities filled with a plurality of electrochemical storage cells, wherein each of the plurality of electrochemical storage cells comprises:
an anode electrode;a cathode electrode; anda separator located between the anode electrode and the cathode electrode; and wherein each of the housing and the lid comprises non-load bearing opposing external surfaces of each cell cavity; and
a binding member interconnecting the opposing pressure plates; wherein when the binding member is placed in a condition of tension, the non-load bearing opposing external surfaces of each cell cavity impart a pressure to each the plurality of electrochemical storage cells such that the storage cells bear a load of the pressure; wherein the anode and cathode electrodes of the electrochemical storage cells bear at least 90 percent of the loads applied to the energy storage assembly. |
