This disclosure relates to compounds containing a fluorophore covalently bonded to at least one protected sulfonate group of formula (I):;
in which X and R2-R5 are defined in the specification. This disclosure also relates to use of these compounds as dyes in an imaging methods, as well as intermediates that can be used to prepare these compounds.

a fluorophore covalently bonded to at least one protected sulfonate group of formula (I):wherein
X is C(R1) or N, in which R1 is H, halo, or C1-C10 alkyl; R3 is S—S—Ra, S—Ra, NO2, ORa, OC(O)Ra, halo C1-C10 alkyl, or aryl, in which Ra is C1-C10 alkoxy, C1-C10 alkyl, or C1-C20 heterocycloalkyl and is optionally substituted with NRR′, halo, OR, C3-C20 cycloalkyl, C1-C20 heterocycloalkyl, aryl, or heteroaryl, each of R and R′, independently, being H or C1-C10 alkyl; and each of R2, R4, and R5, independently, is H, halo, or C1-C10 alkyl; provided that, when X is CH, R3 is not OC(O)CH3.
