A method for producing a stretchable sheet that can uniform the shape, such as the width and thickness, and the strength, of a stretched nonwoven fabric. The method for producing a stretchable sheet according to the invention comprises a step of stretching a nonwoven fabric in the cross-machine direction perpendicular to the machine direction in which the nonwoven fabric is transported and a step of compressing the nonwoven fabric stretched in the step of stretching the nonwoven fabric, in the thickness direction of the nonwoven fabric.

1. A method for producing a stretchable sheet from a nonwoven fabric comprising extensible fibers and stretched fibers, the method comprising;
a step of stretching the nonwoven fabric in the cross-machine direction perpendicular to the machine direction in which the nonwoven fabric is transported between two stretching rolls having teeth and grooves extending in a rotational direction thereof, without holding both peripheral edge portions of the nonwoven fabric, to form the stretched nonwoven fabric having wrinkles extending in the machine direction; and thereafter a step of compressing the nonwoven fabric stretched in the step of stretching the nonwoven fabric, in the thickness direction of the nonwoven fabric while being heated, to reduce the thickness of the stretched nonwoven fabric and the height of the wrinkles of the stretched nonwoven fabric, to thereby make the thickness of the stretched nonwoven fabric uniform.
