Disclosed are a stacked image sensor including a color separation element to restrain a change in color separation efficiency according to a change in the incident angle of incident light and an image pickup apparatus including the stacked image sensor. The stacked image sensor may include a first light sensing layer and a second light sensing layer which forms a stack structure, and a color separation device arranged between the first light sensing layer and the second light sensing layer. According to the stacked image sensor, as seen from the normal direction of the second light sensing layer, the color separation device can be symmetrical to at least four directions parallel to the surface of the second light sensing layer.
