The present invention relates to a mobile terminal and a control method thereof. The mobile terminal includes: a display unit; a memory in which at least a piece of content to be shared with at least one external terminal is stored; a wireless communication unit which performs communication for content sharing with the external terminal; and a control unit which receives a request for activation of a sharing mode, search for the external terminal around, switches a first communication mode which is currently connected or is already requested for connection depending on the existence of the external terminal around to a second communication mode, and controls the reception of the content through the second communication mode. Depending on the existence of the external terminal around with which the content will be shared, the present invention guides the external terminal to download the content at the efficient download speed.
