Disclosed are a method and an apparatus for recognizing a face. An objective of the present invention is to apply an identical makeup pattern to an input image and a registration image to perform face recognition which is robust to a facial change by makeup. The method for recognizing a face comprises the following steps of: identifying a first makeup pattern applied to an area of interest of a first image; applying the first makeup pattern to an area of interest of a second image corresponding to the area of interest of the first image to generate a third image; and comparing the third image and the first image to recognize a face.
