A magnetic resonance imaging apparatus and a method for processing the magnetic resonance image are disclosed. The magnetic resonance imaging apparatus comprises: an acquisition unit which photographs a magnetic resonance image of a brain to acquire a first image that is a T1 weighted image and a second image that is a FLAIR (fluid attenuated inversion recovery) image; an image processing unit which decides the white matter area in the second image on the basis of the first image and the second image, and detects a white matter lesion of the white matter area; and an output unit which displays the detected white matter lesion and change according to the time of the white matter lesion area.
