The present invention provides novel, multielectrode arrays (MEAs) for in vitro applications. In an aspect, array electrodes are provided on a membrane containing a plurality of nanowires for each electrode. The nanowires are preferably grown in nanopores produced by ion track lithography. Furthermore, the present invention provides portable devices for operating a MEA. In preferred embodiments, the device comprises an on-device controller equipped with a temporary data storage unit, the controller being configured to transmit measurements of electric characteristics of a sample to a server by a wireless connection.
