The present invention relates to a composition for preventing or treating sepsis, comprising methylthiouracil as an active ingredient and, more specifically, to a pharmaceutical composition for preventing or treating sepsis or septic shock, comprising methylthiouracil as an active ingredient. The compound of the present invention inhibits the secretion of the high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) which is a mediating factor of the sepsis, has an effect of inhibiting proinflammatory signaling associated with the HMGB1, and has a significant effect on the sepsis in an actual animal model having sepsis in vivo. |
