The present disclosure falls within the field of therapies for skin or mucosal infections and relates to the use of bromelain, alone or in combination with antimicrobial agents, for inhibiting, reducing or treating biofilms in infections caused by the presence of such pathogenic mechanism. Such use intends to take advantage of the enzymatic activity of bromelain to destroy the biofilms and allow the penetration of antifungal agents, thereby potentiating local activity thereof at the focus of infection, treating and reducing symptoms. The present disclosure can be used in the pharmaceutical sector for treating infections, in creams, lotions, gels or ampoules for local application to the skin or mucosae. Formulations have been developed that are able to maintain stability of the enzyme and of the other active components, with good characteristics for use on the skin or mucosae, in particular the vagina, thus promoting efficacy and acceptability of the final product. |
