A specimen observation device is provided with an illumination optical system and an observation optical system. The illumination optical system includes a light source 1, a condenser lens 4, and an opening material 5. The observation optical system includes an objective lens 8 and an imaging lens 10. The opening material 5 includes a light-shielding or light-reducing part 5a1 and a transmissive part 5b, and is disposed so that the light-shielding or light-reducing part 5a1 includes the optical axis of the illumination optical system. The transmissive part 5b is located outside the outer edge of the light-shielding or light-reducing part 5a1. An image 20b of the internal edge of the transmissive part is formed inside an outer edge 9 of the pupil of the objective lens, and an image 20a of the outer edge of the transmissive part is formed outside the outer edge 9 of the pupil of the objective lens.
