Setting of justifiers in end-of-line justifying typewriters

In end-of-line justifiers, e.g. of constructions described in Specifications 715,115 and 717,947 the desired amount of justification to which the justifier setting scale should be set is directly indicated on a letter-space scale e by an indicator i during the printing of a trial line, or by blank typing (i.e. tapping out the wording on the spacing key) the end part of the line in which justification is to be effected. The reading on the scale e is then used to set a justifying mechanism J to a corresponding marking on a scale E. In the embodiment shown, the scale e comprises a series of differently-coloured markings n on a clip C adjustable along a graduated paper bail R so that the central or zero marking registers with the indicator i fixed on the typewriter frame at the desired right hand end of 'the lines. For convenience the indicator may be formed with a second pointer i1 so that a bail-roller r may take up or remain in a position best suited for controlling a paper sheet. A second indicator plate may be fitted on the right of the type-guide G. After the typing of the last letter in a predetermined unjustified terminal segment (end portion) of a line or after typing of a whole trial line, the amount of justification is seen on the scale, and the justifying mechanism J may then be readily set to a corresponding marking on the scale E. The commencement of the terminal segment is determined by adjustment of the stop k on the machine frame. The clip C comprises two hooks c, c1 for engaging the bail R and the scale e passing behind the bail. Alternatively, the scale e may be formed in front of the bail on a horizontal part integral with two side-pieces similar to hooks c, c1. The clip may also be of the form shown in Fig. 7 and the markings n may be circular, eliptical, square, triangular, etc.; the marks on either side of the zero may be similar or different in shape. If it is required to have the scales numbered, the marks + 2, - 2 only are made. The scale e, alternatively, may be (a) permanently fixed on the bail R with the indicator i adjustable on the frame; (b) adjustably mounted on the frame with the indicator fixed on the carriage; or (c) fixed on the frame with the indicator adjustably mounted on the carriage. The justification mechanism J may be any of the forms described in Specification 715,115. Specification 723,942 relating to means for accelerating the blank typing also is referred to.
