The invention addresses the problem of devising a method which allows cables in installations or devices to be easily identified. The invention is further useful for testing and establishing wiring and installation diagrams more efficiently and effectively. This is achieved by fault-finding methods for cables of installations or devices, in which an optical waveguide (4) is integrated in parallel into a cable (1) to be tested, in such a way that, when a light source (6) is connected anywhere to the optical waveguide (4), light in the optical waveguide (4) propagates along the cable (1), exiting at the top or outer surface (5) thereof.
