The gluing unit is provided with: a glue tank (2); a glue applicator roller (3) that applies the glue on the back (r) of a textblock (P); a motor (4) that rotates the glue applicator roller; a wiper (6) that adjusts the amount of glue adhering to the glue applicator roller; a wiper drive mechanism that brings the wiper closer to or away from the glue applicator roller; and a control unit (10) that controls the wiper drive mechanism. As a result of the wiper assuming, in succession with a prescribed timing, the three positions of a first open position that is separated from the outer circumferential surface of the glue applicator roller by a first distance, a second open position separated from the outer circumferential surface of the glue applicator roller by a second distance that is shorter than the first distance, and a closed position in contact with the outer circumferential surface of the glue applicator roller, as the textblock passes over the glue applicator roller, the leading end of the back of the textblock engages with the top face region of the glue applicator roller to which glue is adhering with a first thickness and the middle and trailing end of the back of the textblock engage with the top face region of the glue applicator roller to which glue is adhering with a second thickness that is smaller than the first thickness. |
