A manually-actuated retention and quick release mechanism for the drive screw 26 of a power tool, such as used with a blind threaded rivets, comprises a releasable locking member 44, preferably a cap 44 with an internal screw thread. The cap 44 is selectively coupled to an externally threaded mounting member 34 and the drive screw to retain the screw 26 and member 34 relative to each other via respective coupling portions (40,42, figure 3) and preferably an intermediate member (36), for concomitant axial or rotational movement. A manually-actuable detent has a locked position in which member 34 is restrained to prevent release of the drive screw, and a release position in which the member can be moved to release the drive screw. The detent preferably comprises a series of serrations 48 on the cap 44, each being a latch point for a bar 50. The bar may move axially in a slot in mounting 34 against bias of a spring. The slot may be J-shaped to allow the bar to be retained in the release position. Movement of the bar 50 into or out of engagement with the serrations 48 dictates whether or not the cap 44 is locked in position. |
