A heating unit comprising a housing 1 with amino-carrying fibres 4 contained within the housing, a conduit 8 for water, means 6, 7 for delivering carbon dioxide into the housing and means 11, 12 for supplying heat to the amino carrying fibres. The fibres may be cellulose fibres. The amino compound carried on the fibres may be an alkanolamine. The conduit may pass through the fibres or be in contact with heat tubes that pass through the fibres. The means for supplying heat may comprise a solar panel 11. The heating unit may comprise a closed loop for carbon dioxide and may be connected to a vessel 13 containing carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide reacts with the amino compound on the fibres in an exothermic reaction, which heats water in the conduit. The heating unit is used to heat water for domestic use for either direct use of the hot water or for use in central heating systems. A method of heating water is also claimed. |
