PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface emitting laser element that has a stable polarization direction while controlling oscillation in a high-order lateral mode.SOLUTION: A surface emitting laser element comprises a p-side electrode 113, provided surrounding an emitting region, on an emitting surface where laser light is emitted. In the emitting region, a mode filter 115 which is an optically transparent dielectric film provided surrounding a center part of the emitting region is formed so as to have an optical thickness of λ/4. Then a part of relatively high reflectivity of the center part of the emitting region is different in length with respect to two mutually orthogonal directions (X-axial direction and Y-axial direction) in the emitting surface, and a current injection region of the p-side electrode 113 which is in contact with a contact layer 109 has shape anisotropy. |
