A method of manually releasing a vehicle park mode comprises manually rotating via a handle 520 a selector shaft 522 from a park position P1 to a park release position P2 and then locking the lever 520. The lever 520 is locked by an operative who hooks a hook member 560 around a pin 530 attached to transmission housing 510H. The hook member 560 may be permanently coupled to the release lever 520 or it may be coupled if and when required. Pin 530 may also be permanently coupled to the release lever 510H or it may be coupled if and when required. In some embodiments the operator pushes a service pin (130, fig 1) through a hole (225) and then into a pin receiving aperture (115). The lever 120 may be rotated by pulling on a Bowden cable (440) and locked by a service pin (430). The lever 520 may be bi-stable and bent so that a hook-tip (320T) engages with a recess (315).
