摘要 A method of treating a stream of spent liquid explosive nitric ester wash-waters comprises emulsifying said wash-waters with a stream of a non-explosive liquid of aromatic nitro-hydrocarbon character consisting at least predominantly of a non-explosive aromatic mono-nitrohydrocarbon or mixture of such mono-nitrohydrocarbons liquid at ordinary temperatures and arranging the proportions of said non-explosive liquid of aromatic nitro-hydrocarbon character and said wash-waters so that as a result of their emulsification the wash-waters are substantially freed from the liquid explosive nitric ester and that the resulting solution of the liquid explosive nitric ester in said non-explosive liquid is of a liquid explosive nitric ester concentration below that necessary for it to be capable of propagating a detonation, and thereafter permitting the resulting stream of emulsion to separate into its aqueous phase consisting of extracted spent wash-water and its non-explosive phase consisting of a solution of said liquid explosive nitric ester in said non-explosive liquid of aromatic nitro-hydrocarbon character. The non-aqueous phase may be re-emulsified with further spent liquid explosive nitric ester wash-water. The non-aqueous phase, neutralized with aqueous alkali if acid, may be used in blasting explosive compositions. Non-explosive aromatic mono-nitro-hydrocarbons mentioned are o-nitrotoluene and liquid mixtures of mononitroxylenes. The drawing of the apparatus (not shown) includes storage tanks for liquid explosive nitric ester wash-waters and non-explosive liquid of aromatic nitro-hydrocarbon character, a centrifugal pump for effecting emulsification and a separator. The solution of the nitric ester in the non-explosive liquid is recycled until the nitric ester content reaches the desired value. In an example nitroglycerine wash-waters are extracted in the above apparatus with o-nitrotoluol and the o-nitrotoluol phase is neutralized with aqueous sodium carbonate solution. The o-nitrotoluol is incorporated in a blasting explosive composition (see Group XXI).
