Systems and methods for controlling communication systems for the hearing impaired are disclosed. A portable communication device requests control over a plurality of communication devices. The portable communication device connects to and controls the plurality of communication devices. The portable communication device includes a user interface that enables a user to transfer a call from a first communication device to a second communication device.

1. A communication system comprising:
a video phone configured to: enable a hearing-impaired user of the video phone to participate in a communication session with another user of another communication device; communicate through at least one of a personal area network and a local area network with a portable communication device, which controls functions of the video phone, at a same location as the video phone to receive commands corresponding to the functions of the video phone, wherein the user operating the portable communication device is the same user of the video phone instead of a third-party agent; and control functions of the video phone responsive to the commands received from the portable communication device, wherein the functions include at least one of: placing an outgoing call from the video phone to the another communication device; and handling an incoming call to the video phone from the another communication device.
