The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method for distinguishing an electric power system configuration, capable of simulating the contingency of a parallel double-circuit transmission line with respect to exceptional system configuration such as a bus bar separation or a one-end open configured transmission line. To this end, the apparatus for distinguishing the electric power system configuration according to the present invention includes: a bus bar information generating part for generating bus bar information having a parent bus bar number and a child bus bar number with respect to a parent bus bar and a child bus bar derived by bus bar separation or one-end open; an equivalent conversion part for converting the parent bus bar number and the child bus bar number into one united bus bar number, and generating equivalent bus bar information by converting the united bus bar number to an equivalent bus bar number; and a contingency investigation part for outputting list information of the contingency based on the equivalent bus bar information, wherein the list information of the contingency includes at least one of a simulation order, facility information, and the equivalent bus bar information of bus bars used in the simulation of the contingency.
