This invention provides for labeling reagents, labeled targets and processes for preparing labeling reagents. The labeling reagents preferably comprise a dye comprising a first phenanthridinium moiety linked to a second phenanthridinium moiety through a phenyl group in each of the first and second phenanthridinium moieties, which reagents are useful for labeling probes or targets. These reagents can be usefully applied to protein and nucleic acid probe based assays and are also applicable to real-time detection processes. Specifically, a sample of interest can be labeled with these reagents, illuminated, and measured for fluorescent emission to detect the quantity of any nucleic acid present in the sample of interest.
