Dynamically adjusting stream quality level is disclosed. In some embodiments, playing media content includes playing a first stream having a first quality level of the media content, determining that a different available quality level of the media content would result in improved playback performance, and switching to playing a second stream having a second quality level of the media content.

1. A system for playing media content, comprising:
a processor in a client; and at least one memory device in the client that stores a plurality of instructions, which when executed by the processor, causes the processor to operate to:
play a first stream having a first quality level of the media content;determine, by the client, that a different available quality level of the media content would result in improved playback performance;send, by the client, a request to a server for a second stream based on the determination;receive, at the client, the requested second stream;play simultaneously with the first stream, the second stream having a second quality level of the media content, wherein the second quality level is associated with the different available quality level and the second stream is played in a background; anddisconnect the first stream while the second stream remains playing.
