A method for detecting β-amyloid deposits in a living retina of an eye, comprising: imaging the living retina at a local resolution; and selecting the local resolution such that it is better than 10 μm; evaluating images from the imaging to discern the location of the deposits within the retina to distinguish Alzheimer's disease from aging related macular degeneration; and basing differentiation of Alzheimer's disease from aging related macular degeneration on distinguishing an occurrence of β-amyloid in a retinal nerve fiber layer or a ganglion cell layer of the living retina from the occurrence of β-amyloid in drusen, wherein β-amyloid located in the retinal nerve fiber layer or the ganglion cell layer of the living retina is considered indicative of Alzheimer's disease and wherein β-amyloid located in the drusen is considered indicative of aging related macular degeneration.
