An example of an information processing apparatus has a communication section configured to perform near field communication. The information processing apparatus uses the communication section to perform data communication with a communication target present near the communication section. After the data communication, the information processing apparatus causes the communication section to intermittently transmit radio waves for confirming presence of the communication target having performed the data communication. Based on this, if the communication target is present at a position where the communication target can communicate with the information processing apparatus, the radio waves are temporarily stopped. This makes it possible to reduce the power consumption when near field communication is performed.

A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having stored therein a communication program to be executed by a computer of an information processing apparatus having a communication section configured to perform near field communication, the communication program causing the computer to execute:
in accordance with an instruction from an application executed by the information processing apparatus, performing data communication with a communication target present near the communication section, using the communication section; and by causing the communication section to intermittently transmit radio waves regardless of the instruction from the application, confirming that the communication target having performed the data communication is present at a position where the communication target can communicate with the information processing apparatus.
