The present invention relates to a display device and a method for driving the display device. According to embodiments of the present invention, a display device comprises: a timing controller which outputs a plurality of drive signals and a plurality of video signals in accordance with an external control signal; a data driving unit which receives the video signals and converts them into a plurality of data voltages; and a display panel which includes a plurality of pixels for display of an image and displays the image based on the data voltages. The timing controller detects the counted number of pulses for any selected one of the drive signals, determines any selected one of a plurality of reference frequencies according to the counted number, and transfers the video signals to the data driver unit based on the selected frequency.
