PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for recognizing characters included in an image using a portable terminal device.SOLUTION: A method includes a skew angle determination step which is a step of determining a skew angle associated with an angle from a reference direction between lines by scanning a plurality of rectangular scan pixel regions included in an object image including a character string and a line spacing, and comprises scanning a plurality of rectangular scan pixel regions whose base lines are at angles within a range of -90 to 90° from the reference direction and then generating a histogram for determining a line spacing while the plurality of rectangular scan pixel regions each have a common origin pixel and a base line passing the origin pixel and parallel with or perpendicular to respective sides of the rectangle; a rotational image generation step which is a step of generating a rotational image of an object image by performing processing such that the object image is crossed in a shape corresponding to the skew angle, the direction of the character string included in the rotational image matching the reference direction; and a character recognition step of recognizing a character string included in the rotational image.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3
