Disclosed are a relay controlling apparatus and a method thereof. The relay controlling apparatus according to an embodiment of the present invention includes a relay which opens or blocks a current which is supplied to a battery or leaked from the battery; a variable resistance part which is connected in series to the relay; and a control part which controls the resistance value of the variable resistance to prevent a high current from transiently flowing along the relay.
